Vitamins and Supplements for ADHD

March 11, 2014

Have you ever wondered whether vitamins and supplements can help treat the symptoms of ADHD?

Zinc for ADHD Symptoms

Some studies suggest that children with ADHD may have lower levels of zinc in their body. And some scientists have reported improved symptoms in children with ADHD who took zinc supplements. Zinc is known to regulate the activity of brain chemicals, melatonin, and fatty acids, all of which are connected to behavior.Foods high in zinc include oysters and other seafood, red meat, poultry, dairy products, beans, nuts, whole grains, and fortified cereals.Higher doses of zinc can be unsafe, so talk to your health care practitioner before giving zinc supplements to a child or taking it yourself.

Fish Oil for ADHD Symptoms

There is some evidence that fish oil can help improve ADHD symptoms. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids. There are some findings that suggest that, in children with ADHD who are 8 to 12 years old, fish oil supplementation may improve mental skills. For instance, it may help improve a child's ability to organize activities.A study of 117 children in England found that treatment with omega-3 and omega-6 supplements led to fewer ADHD symptoms. Essential fatty acids helped the students to focus better on reading and spelling and to behave better in the classroom.

B Vitamins for ADHD Symptoms

The B vitamins have two major mechanisms of correcting the nutritional imbalances which contribute to ADHD symptoms. First, they help regulate carbohydrate metabolism. Secondly, they are essential for the normal functioning of the central nervous system. Studies suggest that giving children who have low levels of B vitamins a supplement improved IQ scores (by 16 points) and reduced aggression and antisocial behavior.

Vitamin B-6 seems to increase the brain’s levels of dopamine, which improves alertness. Vitamin B6 is naturally found in brown rice, legumes, whole grains and meats

Vitamin D for ADHD Symptoms

Scientists are now beginning to realize vitamin D is involved in maintaining the health of your brain, as they've recently discovered vitamin D receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system. There's even evidence indicating vitamin D improves your brain's detoxification process.

Magnesium for ADHD Symptoms

Children with ADHD usually have lower magnesium levels, hence it makes sense that taking magnesium supplements can help in alleviating the hyperactive behavior and improve focus and attention. Magnesium calms the central nervous system, which is essential in children with hyperactivity symptoms. It is a key factor in the production of serotonin, which an important neurotransmitter that promotes the feeling of calm and well-being.
