Antioxidants stabilize and ultimately destroy free radicals in your cells and tissues. Free radicals can injure your cells by interfering with cell membranes. Over time, a buildup of free radicals can accelerate aging, contribute to vascular changes that lead to heart disease and raise your risk of developing cancer. Antioxidants are able to remove these free radicals, and prevent and repair the damage done by them. 

 

Which item tops the list of antioxidant foods?

 

Garlic is rich in bioflavonoids. Eating garlic is a natural way to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure and heart disease risk. It even may boost the immune system and help fight cancer. Garlic’s active agents are produced when the clove is chopped or crushed.

 

Blueberries have a diverse range of micronutrients. They’re loaded with a healthy plant-chemical called anthocyanins, the colorful pigments that give many foods their wonderful shades of blue, purple, and red. Blueberries can help you lower your risk of heart disease and cancer and they are anti-inflammatory. If you want to maximize your antioxidant benefits from blueberries, go organic!

 

Beans red, black, pinto, kidney -- are high-octane sources of antioxidants. Beans are full of protein and fiber and low in fat. They also contain important vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, iron, potassium, and zinc. The USDA rated 'Small Red Beans' as one of the most antioxidant rich foods.

 

Cacao is the raw, unprocessed form of chocolate. These untreated seeds referred to as cacao beans are considered superfood, offering a wealth of antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals. Cacao beans contain natural chemicals called flavonoids, a type of antioxidant compound that promotes general health and might lower your risk of several diseases. The amount of flavonoids depends on the amount of processing and manufacturing it undergoes. So go with raw cacao, which can be found as whole beans, nibs or powder.

 

Spinach contains a very high level of antioxidant activity and just one cup provides all of your vitamin A and K for the day, as well as folate. Spinach is powerful in preventing cancer, especially prostate cancer. Combining vitamin C with your spinach enhances iron absorption.

 

Artichokes which are low in calories and sodium, are packed with vitamin C, folate, and fiber.Specific kind of antioxidants in the artichoke include quercetin and a flavonoid called rutin, both of which are helpful in fighting off illness. The artichoke plant has been known as a liver tonic for centuries. Its natural properties help the body to get rid of toxins and assist the liver in its vital operations.

 

Acai Berries is the fruit of the acai palm, native to tropical Central and South America. Acai berries are not commonly known but are becoming very popular due to their high antioxidant properties. The antioxidants found in them have been shown to have a positive effect on the heart and cardiovascular system. In addition, acai berries are believed to improve circulation, fight cancer, and prevent both blood clots and artherosclerosis, the clogging of blood vessels.
