How to choose a deodorant?

Most of us use deodorants in our daily lives without relaizing the problem with the chemicals found in these products, and the effect they have on the body when it absorbs them. Antiperspirants especially – in addition to introducing harmful chemicals into the body, they block pores which can cause a build-up of toxins in the body.

Studies have linked the use of deodorants and antiperspirants to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and allergic reactions.

Ingredients to avoid when choosing your deodorant:


Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any aluminum compound, is a metal, which is used in antiperspirants to help block the sweat glands to keep sweat from getting to the skin’s surface. Aluminum is absorbed through the skin and accumulates in the body. It has been suggested that there is an association between aluminum and breast cancer in women and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.


Methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, or butylparaben, are all derived from toluene, a toxic petrochemical derivative. Parabens are possibly the most dangerous of all the chemicals found in antiperspirants and many other cosmetics, including sunscreen.

Main concern is that the absorption of these chemicals will disrupt our delicate hormonal balance. This can lead to things like early puberty in children and an increased risk of hormonal cancers. Paraben exposure has also been linked to birth defects and organ toxicity.


It is a skin irritant and may cause contact dermatitis. It may kill healthy bacteria as well as harmful bacteria. It may contain carcinogenic contaminants.Studies suggest that triclosan may disrupt thyroid function and other hormone systems.

Triclosan has actually been classified as a pesticide by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a probable carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.


Talc is classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer if it contains asbestiform fibers. Because it is unregulated, if talc is listed on the label, there is no way of knowing if it contains asbestiform fibers or not.

5-Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is also a petroleum based material and was originally developed as an anti-freeze. It is a neurotoxin that is known to cause dermatitis, kidney damage and liver damage. 6-Silica

Silica is added to deodorants to absorb moisture but it may be contaminated with crystalline quartz, which is a carcinogen. It's also a skin irritant.

7-Steareth-n (n may be any number like say 100), may be vegetable derived but is reacted with ethylene oxide (ethoxylated), a known human carcinogen.


These are another class of chemicals that are often used in deodorants and antiperspirants and studies suggests that, phthalates may disrupt hormone receptors as well as increase the likelihood of cell mutation.

9-TEA and DEA

TEA (triethanolamine) and DEA (diethanolamine), which are used to adjust the pH in cosmetic products, have been found to be toxic if absorbed over a long period of time. DEA can cause liver and kidney damage while TEA has been found to cause allergic reactions. These chemicals are already restricted in Europe because of their carcinogenic effects.
